Many people are fascinated that the world-famous theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking, died on Pi day. The date is also Albert Einstein’s birthday. Stephen Hawking died on March 14 aged 76, whilst Albert Einstein was born on March 14 and died aged 76.
March 14 is known as National Pi Day. 3/14 is significant because 3.14 are the first three digits of Pi, a bedrock of geometry. Specifically its the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.
It’s very curious because just as Pi never ends, Stephen Hawking’s amazing mind has left our planet with an endless legacy. From an early age he endured a slow-progressing version of motor neurone disease that gradually paralysed him and used a speech-generating device to communicate.
Hawking was a popular media figure and voiced personal views on the future of the planet. He said, “Climate change is one of the great dangers we face, and it’s one we can prevent if we act now. Denying the evidence for climate change, and pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, will cause avoidable environmental damage to our beautiful planet, endangering the natural world, for us and our children.” Hawking further stated that this could lead Earth “to become like Venus, with a temperature of two hundred and fifty degrees, and raining sulphuric acid”.
It’s another curiosity because question 76 in the Haymakers Survey is ‘Are you going to take action now to save our world?’ And Stephen died aged 76.
